Inheriting a lawn

Writer: edmarvanderlindeedmarvanderlinde

Moving into a new property is always very exciting. Especially when your new property was build in 1890. You can imagine it will come with a lot of challenges.

This challenge will focus on the lawn. The lawn was really a mediocre almost non existent patch of dead lawn, weeds, moss and plenty of thatch. Come to think of it the state of the lawn was just the fuel I needed to apply myself to fixing it.

This photo was taken on the day of the viewing, I was not present but my wife and kids were. They took photos and this photo was one of the little horrors I was presented with. This was early March 2018. Some may call it early Spring.

By the time we moved into the property it was July 2018. The situation with the lawn did not improve by itself over the last 4 months.

I figured the best start would be to open up the space around the lawn. The hedge on the left needed a fair bit of trimming as I am certain it has not been trimmed in a rather long time. The lawn edges had grown like a carpet over the foot path on left and the patio in the front.

By late August 2018 I was able to start seeing the possibilities with the lawn. It still looked bad but at least it was tidy bad. Nothing to look at but at least tidy all the way.

Now I know there is a lot that happened between the photo above on the left and above on the right. The photo on the right was taken late Spring 2021. In my blogs I will provide photos and details of what I did over the next 3 seasons with the little time I had for it. The thing is when you are a professional gardener, looking after gardens of your customers and very rainy days, you end up with not as much time as you would hope to have. Make the best of the time you have!
